Cartier introduced the Tank Chinoise in 1922, during an era when European design was heavily influenced by aesthetics from the “Far East.” The name “Chinoise,” French for Chinese, reflects the model’s inspiration: the familiar Tank silhouette reimagined with bold horizontal bars above and below the dial, echoing the architectural lines of temple lintels.

Unlike the classic Tank, the Chinoise has appeared only in small numbers, with its presence in Cartier’s regular lineup being brief and intermittent. Instead, it has typically been reserved for special releases, such as the CPCP (Collection Privée Cartier Paris) series of the late 1990s and early 2000s, and more recently, the Cartier Privé Collection unveiled at Watches & Wonders in 2022.

This Tank Chinoise in yellow gold we have on offer is the reference 8105 that was produced during the 1990's and powered by a quartz caliber. The 22mm x 30mm sleek case design is substantial enough to fit on a man's wrist. Although the watch can certainly work on a women's wrist too.

This Tank Chinoise is presented in excellent overall condition. The case remains beautifully preserved in its original, unpolished form, showcasing sharp edges and a rich gold patina that has developed naturally with age. Light surface scratches are visible, but they are consistent with its vintage character. The contrast between the mirror-polished and brushed finishes on the case is still clearly defined, while the hallmarks and serial numbers remain crisp and legible. The original “Swiss only” white lacquer dial is well-preserved, free from major blemishes. As is typical for Cartier lacquered dials from this period, fine hairline cracks are visible under magnification, adding to its authenticity and charm.

Accompanied by a new blue leather strap and a Cartier gold-plated pin buckle, the watch is powered by a quartz movement that underwent a complete service in September 2025 by our watchmaker, including a fresh battery installation. It is offered with a six-month warranty from us and comes with its Cartier presentation box.
