The King Midas holds a unique place in Rolex history as the only model ever designed by the legendary Gerald Genta—the visionary behind icons such as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus. The watch’s name pays homage to the mythical King Midas of Greek legend, known for turning everything he touched into gold. True to its name, the original King Midas was crafted almost entirely of gold, with an integrated bracelet.

Originally introduced in the 1960s, Genta himself confirmed in a 2009 interview that the King Midas was his one and only Rolex creation. By the 1970s, it was incorporated into the prestigious Cellini collection, with later models proudly carrying the Cellini signature on the dial.

The reference 4017, offered here, is a Cellini collection variant from the 1970s, distinguished by its leather strap. Crafted from 18k yellow gold, the case features Genta’s hallmark architectural influence—its bold, symmetrical lines are inspired by the Parthenon in Athens. A horizontal hairline finish gives the case a refined texture, while the unusual placement of the crown on the left of the case, integrated into the sloping “roof” of the case at 9 o’clock, further sets it apart from other asymmetrical dress watches. The dial is equally captivating with a beautiful glossy finish that shifts in tone under the light, appearing anywhere from a deep brown to burgundy, depending on the angle.

This Rolex Cellini “King Midas” ref. 4017 is presented in superb vintage condition. Based on the case serial, production dates to approximately 1973. The 18k yellow gold case remains exceptionally well preserved, retaining its strong proportions, clearly visible caseback stamp, and the original brushed finish along the dial side. The glossy burgundy dial is striking and clean, free from any major blemishes, and pairs beautifully with the gold case. As expected, the dial, case, and movement are all signed by Rolex, with sharp and well-defined hallmarks still visible on the case. While the service history is unknown, the watch is currently keeping good time. It is accompanied by a gold-plated Rolex buckle and comes fitted with two brown generic leather straps.
