Introduced in 1967, the 62GS series was the first Grand Seiko to feature an automatic movement. This watch, produced by Suwa Seikosha in Nagano, Japan, initially made its debut in 1966 as the 62 Seikomatic model. These Seikomatic watches were originally promoted as chronometers. However, after objections from the Swiss chronometry association, Seiko developed their own “Grand Seiko Standard” and removed the term “Chronometer” from the dials, leading to the release of the 62 Grand Seiko in 1967. The 62GS was only produced for two years, making it one of the rarer vintage Grand Seiko models. Production began in 1966, with earlier models, featuring a Lion gold medallion, while later versions showcased a "GS" gold medallion, like the one we offering here. The 62GS's bezel-less case design has inspired many modern GS models, and it remains a cornerstone of Grand Seiko's heritage.

This particular 62GS is in excellent vintage condition. In our opinion, and in our experience selling many 62GS's in the past, the case on this example likely has never been polished. This is extremely rare as the vast majority of vintage 62GS gets polished during their lifetime, not surprising for a watch that is close to 60 years old. The case retains very sharp edges and the beautiful clean lines characteristic of the 62GS case geometry. The original dial is well-preserved, with the applied Seiko and GS logos remaining crisp. The dial is generally clean, showing some aging and patina typical for a watch of this era. The original handset and indices display some aging but are overall in good condition. The watch comes with its original caseback, featuring a GS gold medallion, which is in excellent condition. The watch was serviced by the previous owner in November 2023 and is currently running at +7.8 seconds per day. The watch comes with a new high quality Horween calf light brown leather strap from Accurate Form.
