The 44GS series evolved from the King Seiko model produced by the Daini Seikosha factory in Tokyo, Japan. The 44GS is significant for introducing what is now called the Grand Seiko “Grammar of Design” (aka G.O.D) case design by Seiko’s first in house designer Taro Tanaka. The very first examples of the 44GS, which we have on offer here, had a dial with the text “Diashock” printed beneath “Grand Seiko”. This was soon changed with the “Diashock” text removed and replaced with the logo of a lightning bolt that is the logo of the Daini Seikosha Kameido factory. The low beat 4420B caliber is considered by many Seiko enthusiasts to be one of the greatest manual wind movements ever made by Seiko (or by any manufacture for that matter). The iconic Daini balance bridge with the clean finished plates make this movement a beauty to observe as well.
Overall, this 44GS early dial is in excellent vintage condition. The case has been polished in the past but still retains a nice edge with a beautiful Tanaka grammar of design profile. The case has scratches and bumps as can be expected from a watch of this age. The original white/silver dial is overall very clean condition with just some minor blemishes along the edge of the dial most notably around the 4420 text at the bottom of the dial. The watch crystal has no visible scratches. The handset and crown are all original and in excellent condition. The movement has just been serviced by our watchmaker. It is running at -6.7 seconds / day and will come with a 3 month movement warranty from us. The caseback is well preserved and the original gold medallion is in fantastic shape. We have included a clear case back on this 44GS so that the buyer can enjoy the legendary 4420 caliber in all its glory while preserving the original gold medallion.
