By 1969, Seiko had introduced the Quartz Astron, Grand Seiko VFA, and U.T.D, achieving the highest standards in precision timekeeping. The Japanese watchmaker then shifted focus towards diversification and expanding its luxury watch range and in 1972, Seiko began showcasing its 特選 ("special selection") watches in catalogues, marking a significant expansion into the luxury market. By 1974, these 特選 watches, crafted from precious metals, were branded as "Crête d'Or" — translating to "pinnacle of gold" in French. In 1979, Credor integrated the "Acier" line known for stainless steel dress watches and by 1980, Credor debuted watches featuring its tri-peak crest logo and Credor name on the dial, distinct from Seiko branding for the first time.
Ininitially modest in sales, Seiko management observed the growing popularity of luxury sports watches following the 1972 release of the AP Royal Oak and the 1976 Patek Philippe Nautilus. When Credor absorbed the Acier line in 1979, Seiko recognized an opportunity to enter the luxury sports watch market, which required expertise in integrated bracelet design. Seiko and Reijiro Hattori, the president of the company, invited the man himself - the genius who designed the Royal Oak and Nautilus - Gerald Genta to design watches for the Credor brand. While only the Credor Locomotive (KEH-018) from 1979 is officially attributed to Genta, subsequent Credor models clearly bear his influence, featuring integrated bracelets, distinctive bezels, octagonal/hexagonal motifs, and other hallmark design elements seen in Genta's work. In 2024, Credor is celebrating the brand's 50th anniversary and recently re released the Locomotive.
This vintage Credor we have on offer is a full set reference KEH021 model 5932-5040 coming from the original owner.
Overall, this all original Credor is in fantastic vintage condition. The steel case is in excellent condition with some bumps and scratches expected for its age. It has likely never been polished with its hexagonal bezel looking very sharp. The original blue brick patterned dial is in great condition with no blemishes or discoloration. The hour, minute, and second hands all show some aging but is in overall great shape. The integrated bracelet is in fantastic shape with no significant scratches and stretch. The high end quartz caliber 5932 is working flawlessly with a new battery installed in March 2024.
A true time capsule, this Credor comes as a full set including its original outer box, inner box, certificate of guarantee dated October 1981 purchased in Kita Kyushu with its retailer stamp, procedure manuals, and other papers. The watch also comes with its full link and can fit up to a 19.5cm wrist when the extra links are installed.
