The Santos story began in 1904, when Louis Cartier created a watch for his friend, the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumont, who needed a timepiece he could wear while flying. This creation is widely regarded as the world’s first pilot’s watch. Decades later, during the 1970s quartz crisis, Cartier introduced the Santos de Cartier in 1978, aiming to attract a younger, sportier audience. To give it a fresh, contemporary look, Cartier equipped the Santos with an integrated stainless steel bracelet — a bold move for a maison traditionally known for working with precious metals.

In 1987, Cartier further refined the design, releasing the Santos Galbée. This updated model featured a more curved case and a redesigned bracelet, giving it a sleeker, more streamlined appearance compared to the earlier version. Today, the Santos remains one of Cartier’s most iconic timepieces, arguably the most famous model in the brand’s long and distinguished history.

This particular Santos Galbée ref. 2319 in the LM (large size) is in excellent condition. The case is sharp with minimal wear, maintaining its original bevels. Its classic silver guilloché dial is clean, showing no signs of blemishes or discoloration. The blue-steeled hands, crown guards, and blue sapphire cabochon are all in outstanding shape. The stainless steel bracelet is well preserved with no significant scratches and comes with its full set of links, accommodating wrists up to 18 cm (7 inches). Bracelet adjustments can easily be done at any Cartier boutique. The automatic movement was serviced in December 2024 and is currently running at +5.6 seconds per day. Included with the watch are its original Cartier inner box, booklet holder, and certificate of guarantee, originally purchased in Japan in 2002.
