While the Omega Speedmaster is more famous today for being the watch that NASA used for space expoloration in the ’60s and ’70s, it's important to remember that the Speedmaster itself started out as a racing watch. The Mk40 produced in the ’90s, is a watch that Omega pays homage to the Speedy's racing roots.
The Mk40 is perhaps one of the more unusual looking Speedmasters, with a triple calendar function, day night indicator and a whole host of funky colors. Originally made as a commemoration to the great formula 1 racing driver, Michael Schumacher, today it is more famous for being the watch that influenced founder of Hodinkee, Ben Clymer, to start nerding over watches. This piece further cemented itself as a collectable Speedmaster variant after Hodinkee collaborated with Omega in 2018 to reissue this model as part of Hodinkee's 10 year anniversary.
Overall, this Speedmaster Mk40 is in excellent vintage condition. The case has some light scratches and dings as is expected from a watch of this age but overall it is in fantastic shape with the lyre lugs sharp, and crisp. The crown and pushers are original and is in excellent shape. The dial is overall very clean with the tritium hands and hour markers developing a wonderful cream patina. The crystal has light scratches throughout but nothing major. The black tachymeter bezel is in good condition as well. The automatic caliber 1151 movement was serviced by the previous owner in the summer of 2022 and is currently running at -26.1 seconds per day. It has been checked and adjusted by our watchmaker as well. The chronograph function is working flawlessly as with all the other functions including the day/night indicator and day/date/month function. If you are looking to purchase a Mk40, the condition and service history of the movement is very important as the caliber 1151 is difficult to service and can be very costly when need of a overhaul. The movement on this Mk40 is in excellent working condition.
The watch is fitted with its original Omega stamped stainless steel bracelet with full links. The bracelet has scratches throughout as is expected from a vintage watch of this age. Currently the watch is adjusted to fit a 17cm wrist size. With all the links installed, the bracelet can fit up to a 19cm wrist size. It comes with a Omega box and service pouch, when the previous owner sent the watch to Omega. It also comes with the original operating instructions.
