Introduced in 1967, the 62GS series was the  first Grand Seiko with an automatic movement. Produced by the Suwa Seikosha located in Nagano, Japan, the watch was originally introduced to the market in 1966 as the 62 Seikomatic model. These Seikomatic’s were marketed as chronometers, but following the objection from the Swiss chronometry association, Seiko established their own “Grand Seiko Standard” and removed the word “Chonometer” from their dials - thus bringing the 62 Grand Seiko to the market in 1967. The 62GS was only produced for two years making it one of the rarer vintage Grand Seiko model. Production started in 1966 with earlier variants, like the one we have on offer here, donning a Lion gold medallion while later variants had the "GS" gold medallion. The 62GS case design has been used in many of the modern GS models for its timeless / revolutionary bezel less case architecture and the watch remains one of most important watch for Grand Seiko's heritage.

Overall this 62GS is in excellent vintage condition. The case has been polished in the past but retains its sharp edges with clean lines of the 62GS case geometry. The original dial is well preserved with the applied Seiko and GS applied logo in crisp shape. Overall the dial is clean with some aging and patina as is expected from a watch of this age. The crystal has been replaced with a new old stock crystal. The handset and index are original and shows aging but is in overall good condition. The watch comes with its original caseback with the coveted GS lion medallion. The caseback medallion is in excellent condition. The watch has been serviced by our watchmaker in November 2022 and is running at +5.1 sec/day.
