The 56GS series of vintage Grand Seiko is second only to the 61GS with regards to the diversity of the watches produced. The three movements that were used in this series were the 5641A (no-date), 5645A (date) and 5646A (day-date), making this the only series with all three complication versions. In all there were 35 different models in the 56GS series. This specific example is the 5646 day date Grand Seiko with a Japanese character (Kanji) day wheel. This 56GS is cased in the 7010 case which employs the iconic Tanaka Taro "grammar of design" which was also used the 45GS 8000 cases and 44GS. The case is slightly thicker than its 45GS and 44GS predecessor's because the 56GS is powered by a hibeat automatic movement.

This is an all original vintage Grand Seiko 5646-7010. Overall, this piece is in excellent condition. The case has been polished in the past but retains sharp edges with a beautiful Tanaka grammar of design profile. The original matte white dial is in excellent condition with no major blemishes in the dial. The crystal has been replaced with a new old stock original 56GS crystal. The handset and crown are all original and in great condition as is the daydate function which has a lovely Japanese kanji day wheel. The gold medallion on the caseback is original and is in good condition. The movement was serviced in September 2023 and is currently running at +6.2 seconds/day.
