In 1912, Louis Cartier designed the original tortoise-inspired watch, the Tortue. At a time when most watches were round, its accented form and unprecedented design went on to shape a classic of Cartier watchmaking.
This is the highly sought after CPCP (Cartier Paris Collection Privee) Tortue XL (extra large size) in rose gold. The time-only Tortue for the CPCP collection was produced in yellow gold, rose gold, and platinum. The platinum (like all other platinum CPCP's) had the smallest production number followed by the rose gold with yellow gold being by far the most common out of the three. The dial of the watch is wonderfully executed with all the collector favorite CPCP dial code present including a subtle guilloché pattern with a rossete motif in the center, black painted Roman numerals, the chemin-de-fer minute track, and the beautiful flame-blued Breguet hands. The Tortue also has a clear case back which allows you to marvel at the beauty of the hand wound 9601 MC caliber which was based on a JLC movement. At the Cartier Manufature in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the movement undergoes intricate finishing by hand. Its steel components are decorated, its bridges are hand-chamfered and the ‘double C’ cipher of Cartier is engraved onto the bridges. From the dial, the case to the movement, every detail of the watch has been delicately attended to.
Overall, this Tortue is in excellent condition. The case is in beautiful, unpolished shape and retains its original edge and curves. The dial is also flawless. The watch comes with a generic grey calf leather strap as well as its original Cartier rose gold deployant clasp. The movement was just serviced in 2024. The watch comes with its original mahogany wood CPCP box (box is missing the watch pillow and pillow holder) and the certificate of guarantee.
