The Tonneau was introduced by Cartier in 1906, two years after the first Cartier wristwatch, the Santos went on sale. “Tonneau” means “barrel” in French and obviously refers to the shape of the watch, which was at the time a bold move by Cartier challenging the cultural norms of a round watch. Although less known than the other shaped watches of Cartier such as the Santos, Tank, Tortue, Cintree, etc., the Tonneau remains one of the most original and elegant designs ever executed by the Paris maison. The Tonneau seems to hold a special place amongst Cartier collectors as it is a timeless watch where elegance, masculinity, sophistication meet.
Overall, this piece is in excellent condition. The guilloche dial and painted numerals are clean with no blemishes or discoloration. Interestingly, the dial on this Tonneau from the early Collection Privee Cartier Paris series (or CPCP in short) has a “made in France” painted on the bottom of the dial - a contrast to the “swiss made” text that accompanies the 2006 CPCP Tonneau. The hands are also blue steel sword hands instead of the Breguet hands which were used in the 2006 CPCP models. The hidden Cartier signature is on the seven. This Tonneau employs the manual wind MC060 caliber which was a movement supplied by Frederique Piguet and beautifully finished by Cartier. The movement went through a complete servicing in July 2019 and is running well at -13.1 seconds / day. This watch comes with the original CPCP mahogany wooden box, guarantee card, card holder, as well as the user manual detailing all the CPCP models at that time. It also includes the original Cartier leather strap and pink gold buckle. This is a one owner watch purchased by the original owner at the Matsuzakaya department store in Nagoya, Japan in 2000.
