Inspired by the Renault tanks that the French jeweler saw in battle on the Western Front during the first World War, the Tank has been the foundation of Cartier since 1917. This example is the Tank released as part of the Must de Cartier line which was simultaneously a marketing concept and a brand name under the French maison first introduced in 1977. The watch paid tribute to the original Tank Louis Cartier and was launched with more than a dozen different dial options, like dark blue, red, and even a striped pattern. This example is the highly coveted Black onyx lacquer dial with silver painted Roman numerals, powered by a mechanical ETA movement.
Overall, this piece is in honest and great vintage condition. The case has light scratches throughout with some gold plating wearing off but it retains its beautiful lines and all the hallmarks are very crisp on the case and caseback. The plastic crystal is clean without any obvious scratches. The original black dial is overall clean with some of the silver painting of the Roman numerals wearing off (which can be seen on the pictures. The original rhodium hands as well as the blue spinel cabochon is in excellent shape. The movement was just serviced by our watchmaker in June 2023 and is currently running at +22 sec/day. The watch comes with a Jones in Tokyo brown calf strap as well as its original Cartier gold plated buckle. Along with its buckle, the watch comes with a period correct Cartier box.
