Cartier introduced the Tonneau in 1906, just two years after the first Cartier wristwatch, the Santos, was released. The word "Tonneau," meaning "barrel" in French, aptly describes the watch's distinctive shape, which was a daring departure from the traditional round watches of the time. Though it may be less famous than Cartier's other iconic designs like the Santos, Tank, Tortue, and Cintree, the Tonneau is still one of the Paris maison's most significant and refined creations. Among Cartier collectors, the Tonneau holds a special place as a timeless piece where elegance, masculinity, and sophistication converge.

Overall, this Tonneau is in overall great vintage condition. Although there are some minor scratches and scruffs on the yellow gold case, the case hase has never been polished and still maintains its sharp edges and is in beautiful shape. The original white guilloche dial is in great condition and is from the later Collection Privee Cartier Paris series (or CPCP in short) as can be distinguished by the rosette motiff in the center of the dial and the “swiss made” text signed at the bottom of the dial.  The hands are also the Breguet hands which are accompanied on the later CPCP models compared to the blued steel hands on the earlier CPCP Tonneau models. This Tonneau employs the manual wind MC060 caliber which was a movement supplied by Frederique Piguet and is beautifully finished by Cartier. The movement was recently serviced by the Cartier Tokyo boutique in July 2024. This watch comes with the original CPCP mahogany inner wooden box and certificate of guarantee which is dated and has a retailer stamp showing that it was originally purchased by t the Cartier boutique in Hong Kong. The set also includes the original Cartier leather strap as well as the original 18k yellow Cartier deployant clasp.
