Inspired by the Renault tanks that the French jeweler saw in battle on the Western Front during the first World War, the Tank has been the foundation of Cartier since 1917. Introduced in 1977, the Must de Cartier line marked a bold and innovative chapter for the French maison—reimagining the classic Tank Louis Cartier with a more playful and expressive identity. A wide array of striking dial variations followed, from rich monochromes to graphic compositions. Offered here is one of the most coveted executions within the collection: the elusive “Discor” dial. Rarely seen on the market, this variant stands out for its distinctive aesthetic, embodying the creative spirit that defined the Must era.
The watch presents in excellent vintage condition. The vermeil gold-plated case shows only light signs of wear consistent with age, while retaining its refined proportions and elegant curves. Hallmarks on both the case and case back remain crisp and well-defined, a testament to careful preservation over time. The crystal is clean and clear. As is characteristic of lacquered dials from this period—and particularly with Discor examples—there are fine hairline cracks visible under certain angles. These are documented in the photos and are a known trait among collectors. Importantly, the dial remains vibrant and free from any discoloration, with the cracks largely invisible during normal wear. The original rhodium-plated hands with black detailing, along with the signature blue spinel cabochon, are both in excellent condition and complement the dial beautifully. The movement was serviced last year and is currently running at approximately +15.1 seconds per day.
The watch is paired with a green Epsom leather strap and is fitted with its original gold-plated Cartier pin buckle. It is further accompanied by its original Must de Cartier box.
