The Santos story began in 1904, when Louis Cartier created a watch for his friend, the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumont, who needed a timepiece he could wear while flying. This creation is widely regarded as the world’s first pilot’s watch. Decades later, during the 1970s quartz crisis, Cartier introduced the Santos de Cartier in 1978, aiming to attract a younger, sportier audience. To give it a fresh, contemporary look, Cartier equipped the Santos with an integrated stainless steel bracelet — a bold move for a maison traditionally known for working with precious metals.

In 1987, Cartier further refined the design, releasing the Santos Galbée. This updated model featured a more curved case and a redesigned bracelet, giving it a sleeker, more streamlined appearance compared to the earlier version. Today, the Santos remains one of Cartier’s most iconic timepieces, arguably the most famous model in the brand’s long and distinguished history.

This Cartier Santos Galbée ref. 2319 in LM (Large Model) size remains in excellent overall condition. The case retains strong definition with its original bevels still clearly preserved, giving it a sharp and well-maintained appearance. The signature silver guilloché dial presents well, showing only light age-related wear and minor blemishes that are appropriate for a watch of this vintage.

The blue-steel hands, crown guards, and blue sapphire cabochon are all exceptionally well kept and remain in impressive condition. The stainless steel bracelet has also been carefully preserved, displaying no notable scratches, and includes a complete set of links suitable for wrist sizes up to 17.5cm (6.9 inches). Bracelet sizing can be conveniently adjusted through any Cartier boutique.

The automatic movement has recently undergone servicing by our watchmaker and is currently performing strongly at +8.8 seconds per day. For additional peace of mind, the watch is covered by our 6-month movement warranty.

Accompanying the watch are its original Cartier inner and outer boxes, booklet holder, and original certificate of guarantee from its initial purchase in 2002.
