The Cartier Ceinture was first unveiled in 1927 and later revived in the early 1970s as part of the “Louis Cartier Collection,” a series of 12 specially shaped watches that celebrated the maison’s bold design language. This collection included notable creations such as the Ellipse, Cristallor, Gondollo, and Stepped Tank. The name Ceinture—French for “belt”—was inspired by the watch’s resemblance to a belt buckle. Crafted in 18k yellow gold, the design features a distinctive octagonal case with a refined double-stepped bezel, paired with Cartier’s manual-wind caliber 78-1, wound via a flat octagonal crown.
The example offered here is the LM (large model) size, produced specifically for men. Measuring 27mm x 27.5mm with a slim 6.6mm profile, the LM strikes the balance that Cartier purists often prefer over the smaller SM or the oversized XL “Jumbo” version, which housed an automatic movement. The Ceinture is a prime illustration of why Cartier is hailed as the “master of shapes,” demonstrating the maison’s ability to push creative boundaries and craft timelessly unconventional designs.
This particular LM Ceinture is in excellent overall condition. The solid 18k gold octagonal case is well-preserved, with sharp lines and a beautifully intact double-stepped bezel. Light surface scratches are present, consistent with age, but the case appears unpolished and retains its integrity. The octagonal crown remains original and well-matched.
The dial is the original Paris-signed white lacquer dial, which is rare, as many were replaced during servicing with “Swiss Made” versions. Typical of 1970s Cartier lacquer dials, fine cracks have developed, visible under magnification, though without significant detracting impact. The dial shows even aging with light blemishes, while the painted black Roman numerals remain crisp and attractive.
Inside, the manual-wind caliber 78-1 movement was serviced by our watchmaker in September 2025 and is performing strongly at +4.7 seconds per day. The watch is offered with a six-month warranty, a generic brown leather strap paired with a Cartier gold-plated pin buckle, and a period-correct Cartier Paris box.
