It was named after Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian aviation pioneer who was a close friend of Louis Cartier, the founder of Cartier. In the early 1900s, Santos-Dumont had become frustrated with the inconvenient and impractical nature of pocket watches, which he found cumbersome to use while flying. He approached Louis Cartier and asked him to design a watch that he could easily read while flying. Louis Cartier rose to the challenge and in 1904, created the first wristwatch specifically designed for aviation. The watch featured a square face with large Roman numerals and a leather strap, making it easy to read and wear while flying. In 1911, Cartier released a redesigned version of the Santos, the Santos Dumont, which featured a smaller, more streamlined design and a metal bracelet. This version of the watch became even more popular and cemented its place as a classic and iconic timepiece.

This is particular example is the highly sought after CPCP (Cartier Paris Collection Privee) Cartier Santos Dumont in platinum, the Ref. 1575. Encased in platinum, the watch retains its roots as a tool watch with the inset screws on the surface of the case, while the ivory dial and crisp Roman numerals have become a hallmark of Cartier’s style. The case itself is composed of brushed platinum, while a polished bezel is layered on top. The dial of the Santos-Dumont 1575 also bears an intricate engine-turned pattern across the entire face, which provides an attractive visual depth to the surface of the watch. Furthermore, the hands are rendered in blued steel, complementing the crown, which is set with a blue cabochon sapphire.

Overall, this CPCP Santos Dumont is in excellent condition. The dial shows slight aging but overall is in great condition with the ivory guilloche pattern in beautiful shape. The case has superficial marks throughout- consistent with wear over time. More noticeable grazing can be seen on the upper right corner of the bezel (as captured in the product photography). The watch went through a full service by Cartier in July 2022. The watch comes with its original black alligator strap by Cartier as well as its original white gold Cartier deployant clasp. The Santos was born in 1978 as a a result of Cartier’s decision to try to appeal to a younger crowd who leaned towards sportier watches. The Santos now is an icon and arguably the most famous Cartier timepiece in history. Although the case, case bezel, and bracelet has many scratches, one can tell that this Santos was worn frequently by the previous owner with lots of love. The unpolished case and bracelet is still sharp and retains its original bevels. The white dial is a "swiss made" dial meaning that the dial was replaced by Cartier during one of its servicing. The original dial had a white lacquer dial which always developed a crack, and it is common to see a replacement dial on these vintage Cartier Carree's. The "swiss only" dials are made of a different material from the original dials and never crack. The dial on this example is free of any blemishes or discoloration and is clean overall. The blue steeled hands as well as the crown guards is in excellent shape. The blue sapphire cabochon has some cracks but nothing major. The three movements that were used in this series were the 5641A (no-date), 5645A (date) and 5646A (day-date), making this the only series with all three complication versions. In all there were 35 different models in the 56GS series. The C shaped 7005 case series of the 56GS were all constructed in 18k yellow gold. The 5646-7005, offered also with a GS gold bracelet, holds the distinction of being the most expensive Grand Seiko in the entire vintage Grand Seiko line up. Even to those who don’t know anything about watches, the Day-Date is something that is instantly recognisable. First released in 1956, the vintage reference that is the most well known is the model we have on offer here, the Ref. 1803. Since its introduction, the Day-Date quickly became Rolex's top of the line model, thus cementing itself as one of the most revered luxury watches and later, becoming known as ‘the President’. Rolex made many Day-Dates in all sorts of variations with different precious metals and dial configuration. This example features a gold linen dial. The texture is quite amazing and reflects light very well, adding an extra shine to the gold. Paired with the classic early President bracelet, it is distinguished by its non-invisible old-style clasp and really completes the Day-Date look.

Overall, this Rolex Day Date 1803 is in excellent condition. As can be estimated from the case serial, the watch was produced sometime in 1974. The 18k yellow gold case is very well preserved and still has thick and sharp lugs. The linen dial is in great condition with no tarnishing or blemishes on the dial. All lume plots remain in tact and the creamy patina matches the hands. The dial, case, crown, movement, and bracelet are all signed by Rolex. The hallmarks on the case are well defined and legible, as are the hallmarks on the bracelet and the inside of the caseback. The bracelet is in good condition with just a slight stretch between the links and some light scratches. The Rolex logo on the clasp is sharp too. The clasp is stamped "1/69" indicating it was manufactured during the 1st quarter of 1969. As such, it is likely that the bracelet is not original to the watch although it is made in the same time period. Produced by the Suwa Seikosha company based in Nagano, Japan, the Grand Seiko line was born out of a desire to create a watch that was “as precise, durable, easy to wear and as beautiful as possible”.

There are three main dial variants to the GS1st – printed, carved, and raised. This example is the carved logo "split 12" variant which means that the 12 o'clock index is made of two separate pieces of gold. The "Grand Seiko" text on the dial for these early GS1st's were manually hand carved using machinery. Due to its manual and laborious production process the Suwa factory abandoned this practice and switched to the raised logo from around the second half of 1961. In recent years, the watch community, especially in Japan, has finally caught up to both the rarity and beauty of the carved logo variant.

Overall, this GS first carved variant is in excellent vintage condition. A carved dial with a split 12 index is very rare and this all original example would be a dream addition for any serious Grand Seiko enthusiast. The caseback lion medallion is the correct early variant and so is the "S" signed crown. The movement and dial is consistent to the earlier carved GS1st variants as can be evidenced by the movement serial and dial code. The gold filled case has scratches as can be expected from a watch of this age and has most likely been polished in the past but retains its beveling on its lug. The dial surfaces show aging and some blemishes and scratches but is in honest and attractive condition for its age. The hour markers (index) are made of 18k solid gold as indicated by the sun shaped “special dial” logo above the six o’clock. The hand set looks to be original with the period correct “mountain” hands (which was only used in the print and carved logo variants) in great condition. Only on sale for two years, it was introduced in late 1967. The 44GS is significant for introducing what is now called the Grand Seiko “Grammar of Design” (aka G.O.D) case design by Seiko’s first in house designer Taro Tanaka. The very first examples of the 44GS, offered in stainless steel cases with the model number 4420-9000, had a dial with the text “Diashock” printed beneath “Grand Seiko”. This was soon changed with the “Diashock” text removed and replaced with the logo of a lightning bolt that is the logo of the Daini Seikosha Kameido factory. It all started in 1963 when Rolex debuted the ref. 6239. While the nickname and base caliber refers back to the original maker, Rolex performed over 200 modifications to the movement, bringing it up to the brand's standard, to create their caliber 4030. The case measures 36mm by 27mm, height by width. The most notable feature of this Santos Dumont is the 4.3mm thickness, about 2mm thinner than the standard Santos, thanks, in part, to the Cartier signed Fred Piguet caliber 21 "ultra-thin" movement inside. The 18k gold case has developed a very attractive patina due to oxidization- a very pleasing feature of a vintage Cartier. The case is strong and it has light scratches throughout as can be expected from a watch of this age. The finishing on the surfaces are well-preserved, and the bevels are clearly present on the sides of the case. The dial is in overall great condition with no visible blemishes or discoloration. As is common with vintage Cartier's from this era, there are cracks throughout the original white lacquer dial - visible at an angle and on our pictures. If the purchaser would like to have the dial replaced, we can take this to Cartier and have them replace it for an added fee (although we highly recommend not to do this). Seiko). One of the standout features of the Grand Seiko 4520-8000 (and its date brother 4522) is its slim "grammar of design" case profile. At just 9mm thick, this watch is much thinner than many other mechanical watches of the same era. The case famously was designed by Tanaka Taro, Seiko's first in house designer, and was first introduced in the 44GS - also produced by the Kameido factory. Powering the Grand Seiko 4520-8000 is the high-quality 4520A caliber-developed in-house by Daini Seikosha and arguably the greatest movement made by Seiko. Introduced in 1968, the Hi-Beat caliber 45 was used in both the King Seiko and Grand Seiko models, and is loved by Seiko enthusiasts around the world for its incredible accuracy. The 45 family of caliber's consists of the 4502A, 4500A, 4520A, 4522A, and the 4580. Hi-beat (that is a movement with 36000 bph) movements existed before 1968, most notably constructed by Girard-Perregaux and Suwa Seikosha, but the caliber 45 was designed by Daini Seikosha completely from scratch and in-house. The 45 family of movements represent the pinnacle of Japanese watchmaking achievement as its derivative competed in the 1968 Geneva watch competitions where it swept the mechanical watch category for accuracy beating out Swiss watchmakers.

This is specific example is an all original 4520-8000 Grand Seiko. The Santos was born in 1978 as a a result of Cartier’s decision to try to appeal to a younger crowd who leaned towards sportier watches. In order to give the new watch a sense of luxury, Cartier decided to launch the model in steel with gold accents. A daring combination, since the mix of steel and gold was not common at that time. The Santos now is an icon and arguably the most famous Cartier timepiece in the brands storied history. The watch was further memorialized in the movie Wall Street, where the all yellow gold version was worn by Gordon Gekko played by Michael Douglas. In 1987, Cartier further made updates to the Santos and launched the Santos Galbee. The Santos Galbee had a slightly more curved case along with a new bracelet which gave it a more streamlined look than its predecessor. All in all, the Santos is undoubtedly an icon and arguably the most famous Cartier timepiece in its history.

Overall, this piece is in excellent vintage condition. Produced by the Suwa Seikosha, the watch was originally introduced to the market in 1966 as the 62 Seikomatic model. These Seikomatic’s were marketed as chronometers, but following the objection from the Swiss chronometry association, Seiko established their own “Grand Seiko Standard” and removed the word “Chonometer” from their dials - thus bringing the 62 Grand Seiko to the market in 1967. The 62GS was only produced for two years making it one of the rarer vintage Grand Seiko model. It was limited to 100 pieces and was part of the 62GS Historical Collection, modelled after the original 62GS released in 1967.

Distinguished by the crown at four o’clock and bezel-less case architecture, the 62GS reissue was the fourth to join Seiko’s successful line of historical remakes, after the GS1ST, 57GS Self-Dater and 44GS. Though the 62GS reissue has several minor modifications relative to the original, it is a faithful reissue. The dial takes from the original shade of the 1967 model and features the words "automatic" and "diashock". The crown is also located at four o’clock, unlike many of the other modern GS which use the 62GS case (eg. The ‘Seasons’ collection). The original crown placement was designed this way to indicate it was powered by an automatic movement (the first self-winding Grand Seiko) and to make it less obtrusive. The Grand Seiko lion logo on the case back is similar to the early 62GS dial variants which also featured the GS lion. A change from the original is the slightly larger case. It measures 37.6 mm in diameter, about 1 mm larger than the original while being 12.9mm thick, about 2mm thicker than the original. This was done to accommodate a movement that’s larger than the vintage 6245 and 46 calibre. The hands and hour markers are diamond-cut, leaving them with a mirror-like finish that catches the light well in any situation. The watch is powered by the 9S65 movement. It has a three day power reserve and is rated to -3 to +5 seconds a day, which is the Grand Seiko standard for average daily rate. The dial of the watch is wonderfully executed with all the collector favorite CPCP code present including a subtle guilloché pattern dial with a rossete motif in the center, black painted Roman numerals, the chemin-de-fer minute track, and the beautiful flame-blued Breguet hands. The Chinoise also has a clear case back which allows you to marvel at the beauty of the hand wound 437MC caliber which was based on a Piaget movement. It was made in a limited edition of 1300 pieces. Unlike the 2017 reissue, the SBGW253, which featured a larger 38mm case size, the SBGW033 case diameter is 36mm which is the same size as the original Grand Seiko First (ie. GS1st). As such, most GS fans consider the SBGW033 to be the most faithful reissue of the GS1st out of all the modern reissues that would be produced throughout the 2010's. As a testament to its collectability and grail status, an unworn full set SBGW033 made a splash in the 2021 winter auction scene as it sold for over USD 20,000.

From its beveled lugs, raised Grand Seiko logo on the dial, "S" marked crown and the engraved gold lion medallion on the case back, the vintage inspired SBGW033 is executed perfectly. The egg shell white dial, blue steeled hands, and the modern Grand Seiko caliber 9S64 is a welcome upgrade from the original GS1st. The most obvious feature that people concentrate when looking for a GS1st is the way that the “Grand Seiko” logo is created on the dial. There are three main variants – printed, carved, and raised. This example is the raised logo variant which was in production from mid-1961 all the way through to the end of production in 1963. The watch we have on offer here has a case back dated July 1963, making it one of the later GS1st's.

This 3180 GS first raised logo is in good honest condition. Although the crown looks to be a replacement, everything else is original to the watch as can be evidenced by the consistency of the movement code, caseback number, and dial serial number. The gold filled case shows ageing with some nicks and scratches but the bevel's are still clearly visible. As can be seen from the pictures, the dial is in honest condition and shows aging with visible spotting and blemishes throughout. The indexes are made of 14k solid gold as indicated by the sun shaped “special dial” logo above the six o’clock. The original handset shows ageing but is in otherwise good conidition. This 12 shape Tank collection included such familiar models such as the Ellipse, Ceinture, Gondollo, and Stepped Tank. The Cristallor is thought to be one of the rarest of them all due to the relatively low production numbers. The serial numbers for the Cristallor is within three digits of one another and it is understood that fewer than 1000 were produced, or at least not too many more than that. The case is strong and its unique triple stepped bezel is in fantastic condition. The case may have been lightly polished in the past and has no major scratches. For a Cartier from this era, the case is in great condition. The dial is in overall great condition with just small blemishes along the right and left edge of the dial which is barely noticeable. The original black painted numerals are in beautiful condition. The white lacquer dial itself is free of any cracks. The caliber 78-1 movement has been serviced by our watchmaker in May 2022 and is currently running well at +12.8 seconds per day. The watch comes with a generic alligator strap and Cartier stamped 18k yellow gold deployant buckle. We'll also include a custom made grey epsom strap with bin buckle which fits all wrist sizes. The watch also comes with its original eternal International guarantee card issued by the authorized Cartier retailer which the original owner purchased from. With this, Louis Cartier came up with the Santos Dumont, which can be considered the world's first pilots watch. Fast forward to the 1970's and amidst the quartz crisis Cartier released the Santos de Cartier watch model. The Santos was born in 1978 as a result of Cartier’s decision to try to appeal to a younger crowd who leaned towards sportier watches. In order to give the new Santos a modern look, Cartier gave the watch an integrated bracelet instead of a traditional leather strap. Cartier made the bracelet in stainless steel, a true change in course for the maison that had only worked with precious metal in the past. In 1987, Cartier further made updates to the Santos and launched the Santos Galbee. The Santos Galbee had a slightly more curved case along with a new bracelet which gave it a more streamlined look than its predecessor.

This particular Santos Galbee ref 2319 is a very special and rare Santos. It further sports crown guards with the signature blue sapphire cabochon on the crown and has ‘Cartier’ and ‘automatic’ printed on the dial.

This example is the carved logo variant with the 12 o'clock index made of two seperate pieces of gold.

Overall, this GS first carved variant is in great condition. A carved dial with a split 12 index is very rare and this may be one of the best that we've come across. The watch looks to have all period correct parts. The caseback lion medallion is the correct early variant and so is the "S" signed crown. The movement and dial is consistent to the earlier carved GS1st variants as can be evidenced by the movement serial and dial code. The gold filled case has scratches as can be expected from a watch of this age and has most likely been polished in the past but retains some its bevelling and has thick lugs. The dial surfaces show aging and some blemishes but is in honest and attractive condition for its age. The hour markers (index) are made of 18k solid gold as indicated by the sun shaped “special dial” logo above the six o’clock. The hand set looks to be original with the period correct “mountain” hands (which was only used in the print and carved logo variants) in great condition. The movement was serviced by our watchmaker in March 2022 and is currently running at - 6.5 seconds/day. The watch also comes with a quality epsom brown grained calf leather strap from local watch strap craftsman, Jones in Tokyo along with a vintage Grand Seiko buckle.

The watch will come with a 3 month movement warranty from us.

Ships from Japan

Maker: Seiko
Model: Lord Marvel (first generation mark 3 dial)
Case Code: J14068
Case serial: 0521104
Year: May 1960
Material: 14k gold filled
Dimensions: 36mm diameter; 11mm thickness
Crystal: Plexiglass
Caliber: Base Marvel caliber, 23 jewels
Service History: July 2021, +26.4 sec/day
Strap and buckle: Jones in Tokyo x Special Dial Tan Epsom strap (pictured) with vintage Seiko buckle
Lug Width: 18mm
Box/Papers: None

The Seiko Lord Marvel was introduced in 1958 by Suwa Seikosha and was Seiko’s first ever luxury model. Most Seiko experts agree that there are five dial variations to the 1st generation Lord Marvel (1958~1964). To learn more about the 1st generation Lord Marvel dial variations, we encourage you to read our post here.

The watch offered here is a mark three dial with the logo carved similar to the mark one but without the applied S. The carving of the Lord Marvel logo were hand carved by the same expert craftsmen at the Suwa factory who were carving the logo for the First Grand Seiko. In addition, this is a "special dial" Lord Marvel as indicated by the sun shaped octagonal logo above the six o'clock, meaning that the index of this watch is made of 18k solid gold and were hand planted (instead of glued) by the craftsmen and women at the Suwa Seikosha factory. This is a chance to own a piece of history and a top luxury model vintage Seiko at a fraction of the price from the first Grand Seiko with carved logo. The case of this Lord Marvel uses the J14068 case design which is a 14k gold filled case.

Overall, this 1st generation mark 3 dial Seiko Lord Marvel is in a great vintage condition. The 14068 gold filled case has a few nicks and minor scratches which is expected for a watch of this age. As can be seen from the pictures, the top left lug is slightly bent-this does not affect the functionality of the watch though. The crown has the correct "S" mark logo. The original dial is in great condition with the carved "Seiko Lord Marvel" logo in beautiful/crisp shape. The dial is clean overall with no noteable discoloration. The 18k solid gold index are all in excellent condition. The original hands are also in excellent condition and is the highly desirable “mountain” hands shape that was also used in the First Grand Seiko carved logo models. The movement was fully serviced by our watchmaker on July 2021 and is running well at +26.4 sec/day. The watch comes with a brand new Tan Epsom strap made by the talented Jones in Tokyo. The strap is paired with a vintage Seiko buckle (not original to this watch).

Ships from Japan
